GSF 2014: Microbial Fuel Cell
FOSSIL FUELS : Today every thing is made up of fossil fuel. But how much we can use it, afcourse ! someday later we see them in museum. As it is depleting like anything we are just using it and using it.
As I asked a person that " why you waste a lot of petrol, we should save them in future" and then he said " ah! future, we will see it in future.
Almost every one says the same.they are just wasting the fuel like anything. Actually its not fault of these people its actually the problems of technology ( forgive me, I am not blaming technology), it just researches only in products of fossil fuel. Actually it must try to focus on products of different resources.
just like biofuel, electric, and for most MICROBIAL FUEL CELL (Mfc).
As I read in many books and in wikipedia that it is the most efficient device. I also read that it has only one research center thats in Pennsylvania, USA. I think it must have thousands of research centres all over the world.
So, this time I have made a Microbial fuel cell.
It is something like this : The device which harvests electricity from wastes through bacteria is called Microbial fuel cell.
Its just like a normal fuel cell but it don't requires hydrogen and clean water, but it needs dirty water ( I mean waste water, which cleans the waste water and also provides electricity.
Its efficient fuel cell, it runs until there is food for bacteria ( waste matters). It uses the bacteria which are in wastewater.
here is the schematic-
In a microbial fuel cell the anaerobic bacteria in blue chamber, act on matters and convert them into H+ protons, electrons, and very less amount of carbon dioxide(as it is part of respiration).
the PEM or salt bridge transfers the H+ ions to the yellow chamber in which these h+ ions react with oxygen to form pure H20, water.
the electrons cannot be transferred through PEM or salt bridge thats why we put two electrodes in both the chambers which help in transferring the electrons from blue chamber to yellow, in between we have a external circuit.
So, using Microbial fuel a cell is always 75 % of efficiency in which it works as a waste water treatment and a electricity generator. It just reduses the waste of our human activities.
IN THIS I WILL HELP YOU TELLING THE SOURCE OF PARTS AND HOW TO MAKE IT -
- 1) THE FIRST ONE IS CHAMBERS, AS YOU CAN GET THESE IN OLD PLASTIC BOXES.2) SECOND ONE IS THAT SALT BRIDGE , A COTTON ROPE AROUND THE SIZE OF 2 CM DIA.YOU NEED TO JUST DIP THE ROPE IN SALT WATER AND HEAT IT.AFTER THE WATER STARTS BOILING TAKE OUT THAT ROPE, ITS READY FOR USE. PUT IT IN PVC OR SOMETHING PIPE LIKE THING AND CONNECT IT TO IN TWO CHAMBERS.IF YOU CANT GET THICK ROPE, JUST DOUBLE A THIN ROPE TO MAKE A THICK ROPE, IF YOU DONT HAVE ANY PIPE LIKE THING TO PUT ROPE IN IT, RAP ELECTRICAL TAPE TIGHTLY.
- THIRD ONE IS ELECTRODES, IF YOU HAVE HEARD THE NAME OF 1.5 VOLT CELL, HACK IT AND GET THE CARBON ROD, GET 2 OF THEM AND PACE EACH OF THEM IN EACH CHAMBER AND CONNECT THOSE TO EXTERNAL CIRCUIT.
- ALSO YOU NEED MAGNESIUM RIBBON TO CONNECT THE CARBON ROD OF CATHODE(NEGATIVE;AEROBIC CHAMBER;) AND THEN CONNECT EXTERNAL CIRCUIT TO THE MAGNESIUM RIBBON. (REMEMBER THE RIBBON SHOULD BE INSIDE THE BOX (IT SHOULD BE COVERED BY WATER WHILE TESTING).
- REMEMBER THAT THE CHAMBER IN WHICH YOU ARE GOING TO PUT WASTE WATER IS ANODE AND THE OTHER ONE IS CATHODE.
- ITS ALL DONE USING GLUES USE EPOXY OR TWO PART GLUE OR HOT GLUE WORKS WELL.
- AND ALSO THE WASTEWATER CHAMBER SHOULD BE CLOSED.
- TRY TO GET THE VOLTAGE AROUND 1.0 VOLTS AND TRY TO POWER ANY DEVICE THAT USES VERY LITTLE VOLTAGE USE YOUR MULTIMETRE OR VOLT METER TO SHOW THAT ITS WORKING.
AND HERE IS MY EXTERNAL CIRCUIT-
JUST CONNECT THE TERMINALS AT THE PLACE OF BATTERY IN THE CIRCUIT.
ALL THE BEST, TRY IT, IT IS VERY GOOD PROJECT.IF IT WORKS WITH YOU THEN SEND ME YOUR PHOTOS, LINK ADDRESS OR SITE LOCATION TO MY EMAIL- SHADABABBU@GMAIL.COM
HERE IS MY MFC-
MY MFC POWERING A LED FOR 12 HOURS, IT IS DRIVEN BY LID MOTORS "PENNY" CIRCUIT.
HERE IS THE LID MOTORS PENNY CIRCUIT-VERY EASY TO MAKE--
